A Carnet de Passages en Douane (CPD), also known as a “trip ticket” in the Middle East, is a customs document used to temporarily import a motor vehicle. You can find the official CPD scheme details on the FIA website.
It acts as a vehicle’s passport, which allows it to enter different countries without paying import duties and customs duty. It also serves as a customs declaration, which ensures that all the applicable import taxes and duties will be paid in case the vehicle is not re-exported. It is similar in concept to an ATA Carnet, which covers temporary importation of other goods.
CPDs are good for numerous entries and exits within each nation throughout its one-year validity. To prove that the vehicle complied with temporary importation requirements, the holder must get the CPD papers endorsed.
