Customs Compliance, Now a Conversation: iCustoms Launching Its MCP Server on Claude

A shipment is held at the border. You open a chat window and type: “Why is container MSKU-4471 stuck, and what do I need to fix?” Thirty seconds later you have the answer, the corrected declaration drafted, and a note for your supplier ready to send.

Why this matters
Claude has become where a lot of people do their thinking. They draft emails, analyse spreadsheets, summarise contracts and plan projects there. But customs work has stayed stuck in separate portals, tariff databases and inboxes full of commercial invoices.
The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open standard that lets Claude connect securely to external tools and live data. With the iCustoms MCP server, Claude can work directly with the iCustoms platform. You don’t need to copy and paste, and you don’t need to switch tabs.

What you can do: seven examples
- Turn a photo into a declaration. Snap a picture of a crumpled commercial invoice on the warehouse floor and drop it into Claude. Ask it to prepare a UK import declaration. iCustoms’ Intelligent Document Processing extracts the line items, suggests HS codes and pre-fills the declaration. Claude then walks you through the two fields it isn’t sure about. You review it and approve it. What used to be twenty minutes of manual keying becomes a short conversation.
- Classify a 400-product catalogue before lunch. Upload your product spreadsheet and ask: “Classify every item for the UK, EU and US, and flag anywhere the codes disagree across markets.” Claude runs the catalogue through iClassification and returns a clean table. It also explains the tricky cases in plain English, such as why a “smart water bottle” might be treated as an electrical device in one jurisdiction and as a container in another.
- Stress-test a tariff change in real time. A new duty rate is announced on the news. You ask: “Which of our top 50 SKUs are affected, and what does it do to our landed cost per unit?” Claude pulls the classifications, runs the duty calculations and gives you a before-and-after comparison. It can also suggest which suppliers or routes to review first. A task that used to take a team a week of spreadsheet work now takes one question.
- Vet a new supplier before you sign. “We’re about to onboard a new manufacturer. Screen them and check whether anything on their product list is restricted for export to our markets.” iCustoms handles party screening and restricted-goods checks. Claude summarises the result as a clear go, caution or stop, with the reasons behind it.
- Get a Monday morning compliance brief. If you also connect Gmail or Google Drive, Claude can cross-reference your inbox against open shipments. For example: “Which consignments this week are still missing a certificate of origin, and who do I need to chase?” It then drafts the chaser emails for you to review and send.
- Check an ICS2 filing before the vessel sails. “Check the ENS for tomorrow’s sailing against the packing list. Anything inconsistent?” Claude compares the two, highlights the mismatched weight on line 14 and the vague goods description on line 22, and proposes corrected wording before anything is submitted.
You stay in control
