Goods Movement Reference (GMR)

A Goods Movement Reference (GMR) is a unique number required for transporting goods into or out of the UK. It’s generated through the Goods Vehicle Movement Service (GVMS) and acts as a single reference for all customs declarations related to a shipment.

How it works:

  • Obtaining a GMR number: Hauliers need to get a unique GMR for each vehicle crossing. This involves providing details like the vehicle registration, MRN code, and possibly a safety and security declaration.
  • GMR Presentation: The GMR, complete with a barcode, must be presented at the European border. It’s essential for smooth customs clearance checks and entry.

Benefits of the GMR code:

By streamlining the customs process, the GMR helps to:

  • Reduce port delays
  • Lower transportation costs
  • Simplify paperwork
  • Enhance security by improving tracking of goods

Without a valid GMR, vehicles will be unable to proceed through customs.

GMR login: To log in to your GMR checker account, you first need to create a Gateway Account, then you can search your GMR reference number using the Goods Vehicle Movement Service.
