What is drayage?

Drayage is the specialised, short-haul transport of shipping containers by truck. It serves as the crucial link between different modes of transport, such as moving a container from a seaport to a nearby rail terminal or distribution centre.

Primary Role: To ensure the smooth flow of goods in the supply chain, preventing bottlenecks at major hubs.

Key Challenge: Inefficient drayage can lead to significant delays and costly fees like demurrage and detention.

Common Types:

  • Pier Drayage – from port to terminal

  • Shuttle Drayage – temporary repositioning

  • Inter-carrier Drayage – between transport carriers (e.g., rail to truck)

  • Intra-carrier Drayage – within a single carrier’s network (e.g., terminal to terminal)

  • Rail Drayage – transport between a rail hub and another facility

  • Door-to-door Drayage – direct delivery from origin to final destination

  • Expedited Drayage – fast-tracked movement for time-sensitive shipments

  • Repositioning Drayage – relocation of empty or loaded containers to balance capacity

  • Warehouse Drayage – movement between storage or staging warehouses
