What is the Military List?
The Military List is the part of the UK strategic export control list covering items specifically designed or modified for military use. Goods appearing on it require an export licence regardless of where they are going. |
What does the Military List cover?
- Weapons, ammunition and their components
- Military vehicles, vessels and aircraft
- Specialised military equipment, including protective and training equipment
- Technology and software for developing, producing or using listed items
- Entries carry an ML rating, each with its own technical criteria
Military List or dual-use list?
The Military List covers items designed or modified for military use. The dual-use list covers civil items with potential military application. An item designed for military use stays military-listed even when a civilian buys it design intent decides the rating, not the identity of the customer.
Why 'specially designed or modified' matters
Those words carry the weight of the whole list. An ordinary commercial component becomes military-listed once it is modified to a military specification. Companies supplying into defence supply chains often hold controlled items without knowing it, because the modification happened somewhere upstream of them.
